LOCAL GARDENS WIN BIG IN LANDSCAPE COMPETITION

Los Altos Crier

Two Los Altos gardens were winners at the recent San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the California Landscape Contractors Association’s "Best of the Bay" awards banquet. Thanks to designer David Kato of Katoscapes, Inc. of Los Gatos, the Gardners of Lisa Lane took first in the xeriscape category and the Moffats of Cypress Court topped the medium residential division. The Moffats also received the achievement award for residential maintenance.

Garden highlights:

Gardner – Japanese maples, herbs, perennials and colorful ground cover are grouped rhythmically to make up the planting palette. From the front wooden gate, one sees the entry walk that consists of waterwashed flagstone stepping stones, set level with the lawn area and connecting to the main walk of Connecticut bluestone. The stone slabs are hand-cut with a diamond blade to give an exacting finished look.

Moffat – This garden offers hints of Japanese garden influence in its stone placement, plant composition and spirit.

Trained and shaped black pine and Japanese maples were specifically selected for this garden. A tsukubai (Japanese stone bowl) and bamboo spout are positioned to be viewed both from the master bedroom and the garden. The path gradually leads you down to a natural creek that contains carefully placed boulders and interesting shrubs and ground cover.
